How to personalize a template

  1. Point back to your last message or meeting so they know straight away what this is about.
  2. Add one new thing: a link, a short recap or a yes-or-no question.
  3. Keep it short enough to read in the time it takes to open it.
  4. If two follow-ups get no reply, send a polite close and stop there.

Common mistakes

  • Following up the same day you sent the first message.
  • Writing "just checking in" with nothing new to say.
  • Making the person feel guilty for not replying.
  • Sending a third and fourth nudge to someone who has gone quiet.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait before following up on LinkedIn?

A few business days is a good default. People need time to see the first message and get to it.

How many follow-ups is too many?

More than two without a reply. A polite final message sometimes gets an answer; anything after that starts to feel like spam.

What should the follow-up actually say?

One line of context, one useful thing, and one easy question. That is usually all it needs.

Do you keep the details I enter?

No. They only fill in the templates on your screen, they never leave your browser, and they disappear when you close the page.
