HOW IT WORKS

Writing a recommendation in three steps

  1. 01

    Start with the basics

Their first name, how you know them, and the role they had when you worked together.

  2. 02

    Describe what they did well

A project, a habit, a specific moment. One concrete example does more than any list of adjectives.

  3. 03

    Edit and post it

Fill any [brackets], adjust the tone, then write the recommendation from their LinkedIn profile.

EXAMPLES

Rewrites: vague praise made specific

RelationshipVagueSpecific
Manager of a designer Jordan is a great designer and a pleasure to work with. Jordan redesigned our checkout under a tight deadline and explained every decision so clearly that engineering never had to guess.
Peer in sales Sam is a rockstar seller. Sam is the person I called before every big demo. Their discovery questions changed how our whole team ran calls.
Client of a consultant Highly recommend! Priya helped us untangle our onboarding in six weeks and left us with a process our team still runs without her.
Mentor A wonderful mentor. Lee spent an hour every month on my career for two years and always asked the question I was avoiding.
THE RECOMMENDATION SHAPE

Context, example, strengths, endorsement

Say how you worked together, give one concrete example, name two or three strengths, and close with a clear endorsement. Four short parts read far better than one long paragraph of praise.

Tips that work

  • Do name a real project or moment you saw firsthand.
  • Do mention the strengths the person wants to be known for next.
  • Do keep it short enough to read in under a minute.
  • Don't use clichés like rockstar, ninja or guru.
  • Don't add claims about work you did not see yourself.
  • Don't make it about you; one line on your role is enough.

One of the few things on a profile someone else writes

Almost everything on a LinkedIn profile is written by its owner. Recommendations are the exception, which is why readers give them weight. They show how a person works through the eyes of people who worked with them, and a specific one can tip a recruiter or a client toward getting in touch.

Writing one is also a generous thing to do, and people remember it. The recommendations you give show on your own profile too, as a quiet sign of the working relationships you build.

How the relationship changes the draft

Choose the relationship that fits: manager, peer, direct report, client or mentor. As a manager you write about growth and impact. As a peer you write about collaboration and what it was like to work side by side. As a direct report you write about how they led. A client talks about results, and a mentee about guidance.

You can use the writer when a colleague asks you, when you want to recommend someone unprompted after a project ends, or when someone asks you to draft your own recommendation for them to edit and send back.

Questions to answer before you write

What is one moment where this person made a real difference? What would have gone worse without them? Which two strengths would you mention if a hiring manager called you? If you can answer those, the draft will be specific.

Write only what you saw. If you are unsure about a detail, leave it out or keep it general. And think about their next step: if they are looking for a new role, ask which skills they want to highlight. Most people are glad you asked.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long should a LinkedIn recommendation be?

A few short paragraphs, around 500 to 900 characters, is enough for a strong, specific recommendation.

How do I post a recommendation on LinkedIn?

Go to their profile, open the More menu, choose to recommend them, pick your relationship, then paste and edit the text.

Can I write a recommendation for my manager?

Yes. Focus on how they supported the team, made decisions and helped people grow.

Does the tool invent details?

No. It uses only what you provide and leaves [brackets] where an example or detail is needed.

Is the information I enter stored?

No. It is used only to write the draft and is not saved.

Should I ask for a recommendation in return?

You can, gently. Many people reciprocate on their own once they receive a thoughtful recommendation.

Someone asked me to write my own recommendation. Is that normal?

It happens, especially with busy managers. Write it honestly in their voice, stick to facts they would confirm, and let them edit it before it goes up.
